Obituary For Anna Namio

  • Anna Namio was MY MOTHER for 58 years.

Anna, known lovingly to many as NONNA and ZIA, was born on November 20, 1937, in Carini, Italy to the parents Giovanna and Francesco Conigliaro. She entered into eternal rest on April 21, 2026, in Princeton, New Jersey with her son Vito, his wife Carolyn and grandchildren Vito and Giuseppe by her side.

Anna lived a life marked by faith and quiet strength. She carried her Christian beliefs and Sicilian traditions with humility and grace, and her trust in God was clear by carrying and announcing The Rosary continuously throughout each and everyday. Those around her knew exactly where she was because of her soft whispers of prayers and good wishes to all.

Born with the deep tradition of a large Italian family consisting of siblings Rosa, Vincenzo, Lorenzo and Giovanna, she met her lifelong match, Giuseppe Namio, at a young age and married. Anna brought with her the warmth, resilience, and deep cultural heritage of her Sicilian upbringing. She made her way to America with husband Giuseppe and daughter Gioia in 1967 while in her last term of pregnancy with her second child. Throughout her life, she remained connected to the values of family, faith, and perseverance. She understood the importance of hard work which immediately started at the B&G Factory as a seamstress while pregnant. She gave birth to Vito on March 5, 1968 and entrusted her children to the watch of her sister Giovanna in order to return back to work.

Anna shared 55 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Giuseppe Namio, who preceded her in death. She tended to every need of her husband Giuseppe especially during the 14 months of hospice care in the home they shared in Brooklyn, NY. Together they built a life grounded in love, commitment and true friendship. The memory of their bond continues by their living children and respective families including 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, a treasured part of the story.

Holiday's and family life events were mandatory and can be cherished through the memories of all the pictures and videos which simply show the simple life of this loving woman. Of course, there was bickering with her sister Giovanna and sister-in-law Giovanna while planning for the yearly traditions and family gatherings of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and Easter but to no prevail, it always worked out. She would wake in the early hours for the preparations and abundance of cooking needed for the large Italian family attending the festivities. She was most famous for her rice balls and are truly a missing piece of the puzzle that can never be replaced. In addition, her yearly tradition of making tomato sauce was shared by many as she bottled enough to feed an army. She insisted that her hard work be shared and enjoyed with all family and friends and, if needed, she would make more. This is the truest testament to her selflessness and was obvious in all she did.

Anna found joy in singing in her young life in Italy but in a large family upbringing, it became secondary to work. Anyone can attest her presence and be suddenly surprised and awakened with the beauty and loudness of her voice. She loved to sing mostly with her predeceased nephew, Francesco. Together they belted out Italian songs as a duet deafening the surroundings to all present. Anna also cherished her achievements and secretly saved everything! I wish I could show the endless items and materials she stashed away in their original boxes and tags. Unfortunately, we did learn of all until now while going through all of her personal belongings. Another memorable point was her happiness to immigrate to America in 1967 through Ellis Island and making Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, NY her home. One of her most prized achievements was the day she proclaimed the Pledge of Allegiance and became a United States Citizen.

She will be remembered as a woman of dignity, strength, compassion, and unwavering faith. Her life was a blessing to her family, her friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of devotion to God, Family, and now is rejoined with her husband Giuseppe. Though she has departed this life, the light of her faith remains in our hearts and her spirit can be felt by all those that knew her.

I would like to share a few of her last words saying, "I Love You" and "please don't be sad" while sitting beside her. These are the words exactly matching those found on her hidden "goodbye" letter to me. I can lovingly say, Mom, I will miss you immensely. With much pain, I will continue to follow your guidance and reminder "to live, be happy and stay strong in every step". I honestly didn't say it enough but, I hope these words reach you.....

    MAMA, I LOVE YOU!
